If I start a beginning sewing class and picked patterns that we could buy online or that you would have to go buy at a joanns or something would you be willing to start this? I would like to start this week with the girls tutorial of how to thread your machine and the importance of maintenance. So I want honest answers from you as to who would do this with me.

I SWEAR i would do this with you. And i'm not even joking--just wait til I upload the videos i did this weekend of my practice stitches! Marilynne helped me do the thread and bobbin and everything--when i got home i put it all out on my formal diningroom table (who needs company anyways!? ) and i'm just gonna flat out leave it there so i can work on it when i want to! so i am totally, totally IN!

and not that im telling you what patterns or projects to pick or anything, but just so you know whats going through a total newbie like mines mind, here are the sewing related projects that i wish i knew how to do--

--cute little aprons (but not the full size ones--only the around the waist ones)
--table runners
--decorative pillow shams
--i'm dying to know how to do some upholstery for junked chairs and such (i've already collected 3 and have NO idea how to redo them)
--quilts and wall quilts (my first project is using those jelly rolls of fabric)

i'm sure those aren't the types of projects that are starters, but thats just the junk thats stuck in my head. lol

Paige - I am with Jen on some of the things she'd like to learn. And I love everything by:
http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/mainmenu.php. Especially those cute handbags. I know that's probably pretty advanced, but it would be fun!

Oh wow, Melissa!! How cute is those Amy Butler fabrics! Love she has FREE patterns, too. TFS that website!

I am up for this, too, Paige...I have been using my sewing machine on paper...so I would love to get back into sewing(and yes, I have one needle that is just for paper sewing!)

Count me in Paige!! I had my hubby bring in my sewing machine earlier this evening from the garage because I want to sew a basic sun dress for my daughter while she's gone camping with her grandparents! Also, like Jen I'd love to know how to reupholster some furniture!! Probably a very advanced class, but I'm willing to work my way up to that. I have two super comfy club chairs that have the most god awful color of corduroy fabric that I'd like to re-do. And, I'm the kind of girl that has to touch and feel all the clothing in the store when I'm shopping because I love fabric! I had very basic home economics in middle school, which was a long time ago, but I think I could get the hang of sewing again. I have no idea how to maintain my machine either, so that'd be a good lesson :o)

on Saturday when out getting things for my garden, I drove past a sign that said Fay's quilting that was by a long gravel road and I thought how fun that would be to take quilting classes! LOL!! Have you read the Law of Attraction? We are so on the same frequency or something!

You girls are so funny! I am more than willing to teach basic sewing skills. You have to remember I am pretty new to this myself but I come from the philosophy that if you know a little more than someone else you can teach them. So I am going to teach you what I know.

OH and don't get me started on Amy Butler stuff. I am actually making my girls skirts today with her fabrics. I LOVE her stuff. I am also a HUGE fan of Michael Miller fabrics to. Oh heck there isn't much I don't love.

I also have a great website that is a fabric coop that I get my fabric from and I pay less for it than I would at the store but I have to wait a little longer for it. I am happy to share with you girls so you may begin your collection if you would like. LOL!

As far as furniture is concerned we will have to find someone else for that. LOL! I am not going to venture into that area right now. OK I am off to do some sewing for today. I also need to upload pictures.

Paige, the co-ops sounds interesting...funny, I just Googled fabric Co-ops...WOW. There are LOTS of them! Have fun sewing...look forward to photos!

Yes but you have to be careful on some of them due to flakers and people that aren't trustworthy. The one I am a part of I have been for almost a year now and she is VERY trustworthy. I love it and have gotten AWESOME fabrics out of it.

Hey Paige,
Are you going to start a sewing class? I'm all reved up and ready to start sewing. I tried to read a pattern for pajama pants and there are things like straight grain and all that stuff that I didn't understand. Maybe when you're ready to start, you could explain what all that mumbo jumbo is to us newbies? :o) I can't wait to get started!!

This sounds like fun. :D

As a "seasoned" sew-ist, my advice is that if you are going to use any pattern then it is a MUST that you read the pattern instructions from start to end. Some times there are steps in there that you can combine or totally do YOUR way and still come out with the same results, or the steps make NO sense the first time you read it and may cause you to get frustrated and put the project aside, which has happened to me. ;D

Straight grain: the threads that run parallel to the salvage
Salvage: the end of the fabric that is woven tight and not cut

Hope this helps!

Is Potato Leek Soup Crafty?

I hope so, because I was feeling pretty creative!  With summer well on its way, I’m getting into the fresh food groove and inspired to try some quick, simple recipes. The bright hues of the vegies reminded me of a garden party, which in turn made me remember I need to sew a few summer table [...]
