If I start a beginning sewing class and picked patterns that we could buy online or that you would have to go buy at a joanns or something would you be willing to start this? I would like to start this week with the girls tutorial of how to thread your machine and the importance of maintenance. So I want honest answers from you as to who would do this with me.

Mrs. Moo (do you have a first name?) I would love for you to help me. I am not seasoned, I just teach myself for the most part and do the best I can. LOL! I usually turns out cute!

Paige:

Yes, I have a first name. lol My friends call me Ade (as in aide/help or "honest Ade" ...high school...dumb story...)

I do not claim for a minute to be a professional of anything--just somebody who has made a lot of stuff and made a lot of mistakes along the way, so that is why I say seasoned. I am sure that if we all started to make a list of the mistakes we've made when sewing, I've made them all at least once. Not something to brag about, but part of the learning process.

In sewing, it IS the destination that matters--the journey is just a suggestion!

some good patterns are the simple childrens patterns. And I have a pattern for a pillow when done looks like a foot. a good place to look for patterns are thrift shops, or small mom and pop
shop that have every thing but the kichten sink. yard sale that advertise fabric might be good to check out for patterns. good huntings---sheila

My advice to buying patterns is to stick to Simplicity or Butterick at first. Vogue and Burda are NOT for novices. Burda is European and even I couldn't figure out the (one) I bought. I ended up throwing it away! Start with ones that have "easy" or words like "1 hour pants" on the front of the envelope. They are made for people just learning to sew. There are some cute craft patterns in Simplicity books now, good for practice. Simple toys and home dec projects. Try a (simple) Halloween costume for your kids. They don't care if the seams are perfect, it is only for one night. Pillows are good for practice. Walmart has good, cheap fabric. some $2 - $3.50 per yard. It is temping to go to a quilt store because their fabric is so cute, but it is usually $8 per yard and up.
Maybe in the future Jen will bring her video camera for the weekend and I could do some simple instructions. I used to teach 4-H sewing back in 1880 to kids. Have fun!

Awesome!! WE have smileys now!!

Paige, are you still wanting to teach us how to sew something simple? How about the Faith double layer top?? I downloaded that one online and printed it out and am days away from buying fabric for it. I've never followed a pattern before so it's a bit scary even though it is easy

I will have to talk to the owner of the pattern. We might have to get a protected site and only those who have purchased the pattern can join and I can teach it. it is something to talk to Jen about. I am happy to teach it though.

OH, you're totally right Paige! I wasn't even thinking about all that!

Maybe there are others that would want to learn to sew this and then we could ask Shirley how she did her group tutorials for making those sewn albums. People sign up and pay to take the class and then somehow you teach it.
OH Shirley...... How do you do it?? :)

Sounds interesting. I would participate in some of them. This is the first time I have seen this discussion. I need to sew something for our swing so it would be great to get some basics.

Paige, maybe you could choose something easy that would appeal to lots of peeps on here. The Faith top probably won't appeal to lots of peeps since they don't have girls.

Heather, what is it you want to sew for your swing?

I hope so, because I was feeling pretty creative!  With summer well on its way, I’m getting into the fresh food groove and inspired to try some quick, simple recipes. The bright hues of the vegies reminded me of a garden party, which in turn made me remember I need to sew a few summer table [...]
